*Why is Kirsti not afraid of the soldiers? Kirsti wasn't really scared because she didn't really no or what the soldiers were doing and like Sami they were just giving her compliments so there wasn't much to be scared about.

*How would you have felt if you had been Annemarie when the soldiers spoke to her? Why?

I might have been a bit nervous because the soldiers had guns and i'd probably not know what they would do it could result as a good or bad thing so i really would never know.

Chapter 2
Do you think King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the Nazis? Why? Yes, because they didn't really have any soldiers left so why take the chance to lose more lives and you could end up with no more soldiers.
  • Would you be willing to die to protect the leader of your country? Why?
I would because he is the man who gives the direct orders to the country and he is probably the most important person of the entire country.
  • What happened to Annemarie's older sister Lise? Lise died two days before and peter were married from an accident of some sort that Iam not really sure of what it was though.Two days before???
  • How has Annemarie's family changed after the death of Lise? Their dad was very tired and never really spoke about her. Peter her fiance never joked anymore. And Annemarrie would look on her old trunk and try to find stuff to remember her by.

Chapter 3
  • Annemarie believes that ordinary people like her don't have to be courageous. Do you agree with this idea? I do and i don't. I do because i think that ordinary people can be very brave and courageous but they can be scared to but if i were her i wouldn't only think about a negative attitude.
  • What religion do the Rosens practice? The Rosen's practice A Jewish religion.
  • Predict what you think will happen next in the story. I think that they will go to the Rosen's house and celebrate the Jewish thingy and come home with the German soldiers searching their house. Then they will have to run away from their house and find some shelter.
Chapter 4

What are the answers to the questions that are the titles of the first three chapters? For the first chapter they are running to get home from school to see their mom's. For the second chapter the who is the man that rides past the answer is King Christian. And the last chapter is Mrs. Hirsch was shut down in her button store.
  • The title of this chapter is "It Will Be a Long Night." Why was it a long night? It was a long night because they had to hide Ellen somewhere.
  • Why does Ellen spend the night with Annemarie? She spends the night because she is jewish and she is hiding from the German soldiers who are taking away the Jewish people to an unknown place.

1. Why do the soldiers come to the Johansen’s apartment?
The soldiers came to The Johansen's apartment because the Rosen's weren't home so they thought they were hiding inside the Johansen's apartment.





2. What do you think they expected to find? The soldiers expected to find the Rosen family at the Johansen's apartment.


3. Why does Annemarie tear the necklace from Ellen’s neck? Annemarie tore the necklace off of Ellen's neck because her necklace was a Jewish symbol the Star of David so if the soldiers found that necklace on Ellen they would take her away.


4. When Papa tore the pictures from his photo album, what was he trying to prove? Papa was trying to prove that Ellen who was pretending to be Lise was their real daughter. Papa gave the soldiers a family photo.
What proof did he give the soldiers that Ellen was Lise?


5. Do you think Annemarie is brave? Not really that brave because she acted very nervous and scared when the soldiers were around but otherwise she was ok.


6. Why does Mama want to travel to Uncle Henrik’s house alone? No not that i know why though. ???


7. What are Papa and Uncle Henrik really talking about when they talk about “cigarettes”? They meant Ellen and Annemarie were coming over to hide.

  • 1.For what reason is Uncle Henrik’s home a good place to take a Jewish refugee? It is a good place because they have a great view right to Sweden and they go fishing there.

  • 2.Describe how you felt as you read this chapter.I felt nervous and excited the nervous part is when the German soldiers came in their apartment and were searching and asking questions. The exciting part is that they managed to get away.

  • 3. Why are Mama and Annemarie frightened when Kirsti decides to talk to the soldiers on the train?She is nervous that Kirsti will blow there cover by saying we are taking are friends the Rosen's to my uncle's house. What about the Jewish New Year?
    4. What do you think the soldiers expected Kirsti to say? The soldiers probably expected her to say something about smuggling or hiding Ellen.
    they expected her to say she was going to celebrate the Jewish New Year.


Chapter 7
1. How do Ellen and Annemarie feel as they explore Gilleleje? ​They feel very excited and amazed at the lake view and how pretty it is outside.


2. Why is this visit different for Annemarie than other times she visited Uncle Henrik? It is different because they have to hide Ellen at her Uncle's house.

Chapter 8
1. What two statements does Uncle Henrik make that worry or puzzle Annemarie? One statement is that he said, "its a good day for fishing" and the other one is

1. What do you think Uncle Henrik means by “Tomorrow will be a day for fishing”? He probably means that tomorrow will be a storm and the fish will bite. But maybe he can tell cause the cat is hiding and he hides when a storm is coming or coming soon.






Chapter 9
1. Who do you think the ‘mourners” are? I think the mourners are the jewish people that were at Annemarie's Uncle Henrik's house.


2. How does Uncle Henrik explain to Annemarie why he and Mama lied to her about Great –aunt Birte? Uncle Henrik explains it like this. He said that he lied to not worry or frighten Annemarie and the other girls.


3. Find a line from this chapter that shows Annemarie is maturing. One line is that Annemarie found out that her Uncle was lieing and she also forgave him.

    Vocabulary: typhus - a very infectious and deadly disease
    1. What familiar phrase is in the psalm that Peter reads to the “mourners”? The familiar phrase when Peter reads, "he who numbers the stars one by one. The familiar part is that Number the Stars is the title of the book.

  • 2. How do you think most of the people at Uncle Henrik’s house felt during the wake? The people felt very sad and upset.

  • 3. How does Mama keep the soldier from opening the casket? Mama steps infront of the casket and the soldier slaps her across the face. But mama said that Great Aunt Birte had typhus and its still contagious.


  • 4. Reread the psalm and Annemarie’s reaction to the reading of it. What do you think is the significance of the title of this book? I think the significant part of the title is in the psalm it says, "he who numbers the stars one by one." It refers to the Jewish belief that they were chosen by God to be His special people and He would care for them, one by one.

  • 1. What is in the casket? There is blankets and food for the Jewish people to wear and eat for shelter and care.

    2. Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine? He insisted in case she did cry all night and he didn't want to take the chance for her to cry all night. Because the soldiers might here the 3. One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this. One incident is when the soldiers busted in their home and Annemarie stood up to the soldiers. She didn't back down on herself and her family and friends.


    4. Find a section of this chapter that shows Annemarie no longer thinks of herself as the carefree child she once was.
  • On page 94 she doesn't try to worry Mrs.Rosen about going on the boat and getting scared. And she also realized that her Uncle wasn't taking them to Sweden.

    1. Do you think Annemarie will meet any soldiers on the way to Uncle Henrik’s boat? Yes, because the soldiers might be lurking around to see if anyone is trying to escape.

  • 2. What observations about waiting does Annemarie make in this chapter? She finds that you can't just escape as fast as you can because the soldiers can here you and you have to leave at just the right time and place. She realizes that it is harder to wait for someone you love when they are doing something dangerous than it probably would be to do the action.


  • 3. Why does Annemarie worry about her mother’s safety She worries that her mom is always gone and its getting later in the morning. But she is also relieved to see her lieing on the ground but she worries she might be injured.

Chapter 13
  • 1. Why does Annemarie volunteer to take the packet to Uncle Henrik? Annemarie volunteered to take the packet because her mom had a broken ankle so she couldn't run.
    2. Why doesn’t Mama tell Annemarie what is in the basket? She doesn't tell her because they are running out of time to get the packet to Uncle Henrik before they set sail. She also knows that it would be easier for Annemarie to act like the basket didn't carry anything out of the ordinary if she didn't know what it is.

    1. There is a reference to the story of Little Red Riding Hood in this chapter. Which characters from story are like Red Riding Hood and the wolf? Red riding hood is like Annemarie because she is running the packet to her Uncle. The wolf is like the Nazi soldiers chasing after the Jews like the Rosen's.


  • 2. In this chapter we see that Annemarie is confronted with reality and begins to less of a child. What is the reality she confronts? She confronts a mission to get the packet to her Uncle Henrik before they left. Another thing Annemarie faces is that the soldiers are after the Rosen's.

  • 1. What is your reaction to how the soldiers treated Annemarie? I was nervous that the soldiers would find out what Annemarie was taking to her uncle and then the soldiers might have found Ellen and her Mom and Dad.

    1. How does Uncle Henrik define “brave” to Annemarie? Based on this definition, is Annemarie be considered brave? Uncle Henrik defined "brave" as focusing on what your doing and not worrying about things. I think Annemarie is considered brave because she risked her life to get that packet and food to Uncle Henrik before the boat took off.


  • 2. What secret information does Uncle Henrik share with Annemarie about the Rosens? He shares that the Rosens were on the boat just secretly hidden in a little cabin under the boat that holds only a few people.


  • 3. Describe something funny that happens in this chapter. Something funny in this chapter is that when Annemarie isn't sure what brave really meant. But then her Uncle explained to her what brave meant and where the Rosens were.

Chapter 17
  • 1. This chapter takes place two years later after the war. How do the Danish people include their Jewish neighbors in the celebration? They include their Jewish neighbors by the Danish people raising their flag and they would sing the Denmark National Anthem


  • 2. How did Peter die? How did Lise really die? Lise actually died when she was running away from their hideout when the German's found it and she ran outside and one of the army trucks hit her. Peter died from being captured and executed by the German soldiers.


  • 3. Where does Annemarie hide Ellen’s Star of David necklace? Annemarie hides the necklace in Lise's old yellow faded dress she wore when she died.

1. Annemarie symbolized her friend Annelise Platt and Annelise was a girl who did live in Copenhagen during the war with the German's.

2. Annemarie was just like Annelise who's neighbors suffered and made sacrifices.
